By: Morgan Wamboza

The USSSA Mbale City qualifiers climaxed on Sunday at Mbale City Stadium, with Nkoma Secondary School emerging as champions after humbling their long-time rivals, Mbale Progressive Secondary School, in a narrow 1-0 victory.

The tournament attracted 20 boys’ teams and 11 girls’ teams from Mbale City. Nkoma Secondary School dominated both categories, defeating Mbale Progressive in the boys’ final and Bugisu High School in the girls’ final.

In the boys’ semi-finals, Mbale Progressive defeated Mbale High School 2-0 at Mbale City Stadium, while Nkoma SS overcame St. Mary’s High School with a 2-0 victory in a match played at School Hygiene grounds.

Unlike last year’s edition—where the boys’ final between Nkoma SS and Mbale Progressive was not played due to unclear reasons—this year's final was conducted professionally, with match officials ensuring minimal tension between rival student fans.

The highly contested final saw Nkoma SS secure victory through a second-half strike from Kawooya Francis Peter.

However In the girls' category, Nkoma SS successfully defended their title by defeating Bugisu High School 3-0, courtesy of a hat-trick from Shanitah Iman

Hajji Kawanguzi Abubakar, chairperson of the Mbale City Secondary Schools Sports Association, expressed gratitude to school headteachers for facilitating team participation. He assured stakeholders that his committee is working tirelessly to eliminate the use of ineligible players (machinery) in the competition, ensuring fair play and a platform for young talents.

Mbale City has qualified three schools for the regional tournament in both the boys’ and girls’ categories, set to be held in Mbale City.

  • Boys: Nkoma SS, Mbale Progressive Secondary School, and Mbale High School.
  • Girls: Nkoma SS, Bugisu High School, and Joy Secondary School.

The USSSA National Championships will take place in May at Bukedea Comprehensive School and Ngora.
