BY OUR REPORTER
Major Martha Asiimwe, Head of the RDC Secretariat, and other officials from the State House Anti-Corruption Unit, confronted the District Health Officer of Manafwa district on Thursday over the persistent looting of drugs from government health facilities. The meeting, held at the district headquarters, aimed to address the long-standing issue of drug theft, particularly at Bugobero Health Center IV.Major Asiimwe expressed concern that despite the problem being longstanding, no significant action had been taken. "There's theft of drugs, and to be specific, this theft has been going on in your health units," she said. "You've been transferring the problem, covering it up, but now it can't be hidden, and we demand accountability."
Asiimwe revealed that the circle of thieves is large and systematic, instructing that the entire chain be dismantled. "We need to uproot the whole racket and bring them to justice through the civil service."
The meeting also highlighted poor hygiene, absenteeism, and other issues at Bugobero Health Center IV. Songoni Yahaya, a storeman, and Violet, a major distributor, were implicated in the drug theft and distribution ring.
The Chief Administrative Officer, Leru Andrew, was tasked with explaining the inconsistencies in the Health department and whether he had appointed an incompetent staff member as Acting DHO. However, Leru commended his staff, Ephraim Nakhokho, for his performance despite only acting for six months.
Nakhokho admitted that drug theft had been an ongoing issue but assured that he and the District Executive had engaged in efforts to find a lasting solution. He revealed that inter-facility drug transfers had been exploited by culprits and that strict supervision and surveillance would be implemented to stop the vice.
State House officials instructed the DHO and CAO to take immediate action to address the issues raised."
