Bugiri Chief Magistrate's Court Sees Arraignment of Six Individuals on Corruption Charges

On September 9, 2024, the State House Anti-Corruption Unit and Criminal Investigations Department presented six defendants before the Chief Magistrate's Court in Bugiri.
The accused, comprising local government officials and PDM SACCO leaders, face charges of Obtaining Money by False Pretense and Conspiracy to Defraud.
The defendants are Mugunda Azedy, Assistant Town Clerk and Community Development Officer, Busowa Town Council, Maka Christopher, Parish Chief, Buwanga Sub County, Busowa Parish , Kawudhu Mathias, Chairperson, Nawandhuki Busowa SACCa , Balidawa Stephen, Chairperson, Nakidudula Busowa SACCO, Makiika Stephen, Chairperson, Nakawa Busowa SACCO, Waiswa Hassan, Businessman
The court remanded the accused until September 23, 2024.
According to the prosecution, the defendants, along with others still at large, conspired to defraud millions of shillings from PDM SACCO beneficiaries in Bugiri District between January and June 2024.
They allegedly collected money under false pretenses, claiming it was for legitimate PDM activities such as renting space, buying furniture, and printing vouchers. However, these activities were not actual, and the defendants also charged fees to beneficiaries, violating PDM guidelines.
