Busoga Community Urged to Take Action Against Cancer

Dr. Kibuuka Afizzi, Deputy Hospital Director and Clinical Head of Jinja Regional Referral Hospital, urged the Busoga community to prioritize seeking medical help for cancer, citing its alarming prevalence among women and men.

Women, in particular, fear seeking medical assistance and check-ups, neglecting diagnosis and scans, despite these services being free at the hospital," Dr. Kibuuka emphasized.

he made these remarks during the official launch of the "fight women's cancer" campaign at rays of hope hospital on kiira road in jinja city today 01 October 2024 under the theme "Detect, Treat, and Defeat.

According to Executive Director Sylvia Nakami Women in the community must remain vigilant, as cancer cases are diverse and predominantly affect women (60%). Breast and cervical cancer are the most common types She says Statistics indicate that 700 patients visit monthly, dispersed across the region ,500 patients diagnosed with cancer, Prostate cancer most common among men and Cervical and breast cancer most prevalent among women.

She added up saying through community engagements in the region of Busoga, 6% are always treated on site and however encouraged the community to always get up HPV injections against the cancer

However, patients like Apio Florence from buikwe district and Hadijah from budodo expressed heartfelt gratitude to Rays of Hope Hospice. They credited the hospital, in conjunction with Jinja Regional Referral Hospital, for transforming their lives.

They say they have been going through a lot but when they got attached to rays of hope hospital, there lives changed and they went under diagnosis scans after 2 weeks on treatment, 25 days in Mulago on radio therapy but now they feel their life has changed. They added up saying cancer is dangerous and kills but when checkups are done immediately, it can get up healed.

According to Sp James Mubi the kiira region spokes person says the continued support and the purchasing power plays an important role min human health and proved to be providing all the security concerns as needed up for the cancer campaign in the region.
