Busoga East has launched a four-day plea bargain camp at Kirinya Jinja Remand Prison to enhance access to justice and expedite case resolution in the judicial system.
The session, chaired by Hon. Justice David Batema, the resident judge of Iganga High Court, is hearing cases of murder, aggravated robbery, rape, defilement, aggravated defilement, and trafficking in persons from districts including Iganga, Mayuge, Luuka, Kaliro, Bugweri, Bugiri, Namayingo, and Namutumba.
According to Justice Batema, 85 suspects who are on remand at Kirinya applied to take part in the plea bargain process. Since Monday, 38 have been convicted, with 14 committed for aggravated defilement, 7 charged with murder, and 6 charged with rape, among others.
He explained that this system enables accused persons to negotiate a plea, addressing some of the pressing challenges in the judicial system, such as case backlogs, high costs, and delays.
Furthermore, he reaffirmed the Judiciary's commitment to Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR), emphasizing that it aligns with Uganda’s traditional justice mechanisms. He described ADR as an effective tool for delivering justice, particularly for inmates who voluntarily choose to engage in the process.
