Jinja traffic police are investigating the cause of a fatal accident that occurred at the Gaddafi Roundabout in Jinja City during the morning hours of May 1.
The accident involved a taxi with registration number UAS 239E and a motorcycle with registration number 566F. Both vehicles were heading toward Jinja City’s central business city from Bugembe.
According to SP James Mubi, the Kiira Region Police spokesperson, the motorcycle rider—whose identity is yet to be confirmed—and his passenger, Brian Mutesasira, died on the spot. Their bodies were taken to Jinja Regional Referral Hospital Mortuary.
Mubi added that another passenger who was also on the motorcycle sustained serious injuries and is currently receiving treatment at the same hospital.
The driver of the taxi, Job Ssemakula, has been detained at Jinja Central Police Station (CPS) as investigations continue. Mubi cautioned road users against overspeeding and overtaking at dangerous points, emphasizing the need for heightened vigilance on the roads.
Recent police reports indicate that most road accidents involve boda boda (motorcycle) riders being struck by larger vehicles such as trailers and taxis.
According to previous police data, the majority of road accidents occur between 6:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. The Traffic Police Directorate, headed by Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIGP) Lawrence Niwabiine, recently released the 2024 Road Crash Statistics, which revealed a disturbing rise in fatalities.
The report showed that 5,144 Ugandans died in traffic accidents in 2024, translating to an average of 14 deaths per day. This marked an increase from 4,806 deaths recorded in 2023, which averaged 13 fatalities daily.
