In a historic initiative, His Majesty  The Kyabazinga of Busoga William Gabula Nadiope IV has written personal letters to children across the Busoga region, encouraging them to stay in school and working towards a brighter, more promising future.

The letters, accompanied by questionnaires for primary and secondary school learners, headteachers, and senior women/men teachers were officially delivered at the Busoga Kingdom headquarters in Bugembe by the 2nd Deputy Prime Minister, Owek. Osman Ahmed Noor, who also serves as Vice Board Chair of the Kyabazinga Initiative.

During the event, the Minister for Kyabazinga Affairs, Owek. Babirye Yudaya, informed attendees that the Kyabazinga  is passionate about Education and youths in general and is committed to making sure children in Busoga and beyond get a chance to be in school or be skilled. She also informed the guests that the king is pleased to host them personally for further engagement on the subject matter and he is looking  forward to engaging with education leaders, CAOs, DEOs, Inspectors, Headteachers and receiving responses from learners during a special event scheduled for This Thursday 29th May 2025 at the Igenge Royal Palace.

The announcement was made during a high-level engagement and consultative meeting at the Kingdom headquarters, bringing together key stakeholders in education, including District Education Officers (DEOs), headteachers, school inspectors, and proprietors.

The meeting was organized by the Busoga Kingdom under the auspices of the Kyabazinga Initiatives, organisations (in the Office of the Kyabazinga dedicated to advancing development campaigns and social impact programs across the region), together with the OBB Ministry of Education.

This initiative is unprecedented and marks the first time the Kyabazinga (and possibly the only king ) has addressed children directly, highlighting education as the cornerstone of development, community leadership, and personal success. In his powerful message, he urged students to:

“Prioritise Education during their adolescent years (9 to 19), Work hard, respect your parents and teachers, and avoid negative peer pressure, early sexual relationships, and substance abuse.”

The Kyabazinga’s gesture was attracted applause from Headteachers, Inspectors, and DEOs , where they said it is a very impactful way of attracting the attention of young people and commended the King for caringthat much.  "This letter should be  widely distributed to  all school going children, and it will serve as motivation for learners to keep on the right "

As the National UNAIDS Goodwill Ambassador, the Kyabazinga has prioritized efforts to reduce school dropouts, combat child labour, which will in turn prevent teenage pregnancies—challenges that continue to affect the future of young people in Busoga and across Uganda.

In a moving excerpt from the letter, the Kyabazinga writes:

“Today, I write to you not just as your Kyabazinga (King), but as your loving father who sees in each of you a shining star—a dream, a future, a hope, and the strength of Busoga in every sacrifice.

However, I must speak to you and your peers from the depth of my heart about a great danger threatening your dreams, Busoga’s survival, and Uganda’s future: Teenage pregnancy and early marriage must stop, as your Kyabazinga of Busoga, I have DECLARED.”

Owek. Osman emphasized that the distributed questionnaires are intended to identify both the causes of and potential solutions to the challenges faced by schools in keeping learners at school, with the aim of creating a safe and supportive learning environment for all learners.

Also present at the event were several ministers and kingdom officials, including

Owek. Nasabu Nantale (minister OfEducation), Owek Amin Bossa Nkono (Minister of Sports)Owek. Daniel Musota (State Minister for Sports)Owek Kafuko Florence (Minister of Gender) Mr Sajjabi, the Permanent Secretary Busoga Kingdom along with Members of the Kyabazinga Initiatives Secretariat
