Police Probe Dormitory Fire That Killed 12-Year-Old Pupil in Kamuli
By Kenneth Wamatoyi.
The territorial police in Kamuli
District are investigating the cause of a fire that claimed the life of a
12-year-old pupil and destroyed property at Balawoli Primary School.
The tragic incident occurred on the
night of Sunday, May 25, 2025, at around 11:00 p.m., when a fire broke out in
the boys’ dormitory at the school located in Balawoli Town Council, Kamuli
District. The blaze reduced pupils’ belongings, including mattresses and
scholastic materials, to ashes.
The deceased has been identified as
Famba Bernard, a Primary Five pupil and son of the school matron.

According to eyewitness accounts,
the fire rapidly engulfed the dormitory, making it impossible for the child to
escape. His two siblings attempted to alert the school matron, who was at the
girls’ wing approximately 70 meters away, but by then, Bernard had already been
trapped inside as the flames intensified.
ASP Michael Kasadha, spokesperson for
Busoga North Police, stated that preliminary investigations suggest an
electrical short circuit could have been the cause of the fire. However,
further inquiries are underway to determine the exact cause.
The victim’s body was recovered and
transported to Kamuli General Hospital mortuary for a postmortem examination.
Authorities continue to investigate
the incident to ensure such tragedies are prevented in the future.
