Police hunt for fugitives after 10 suspects escape custody in Jinja.

By Kenneth Wamatoyi.  Jinja:  A coordinated law enforcement operation has been launched in Jinja, Uganda, after 10 suspects reportedly escaped from custody at Central Police Station (CPS) Jinja Central in the early hours of Sunday, March 30, 2025. One of the suspects, whose identity has not yet been disclosed, has been rearrested, while the remaining nine are still at large. According to James Mubi, the Regional Police Spokesperson, the Kiira Regional Police Command has commenced a full-scale investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the escape. The escaped suspects were charged with minor offenses, including affray and public nuisance. Mubi stated that the recaptured suspect and those still at large will face an additional charge of escaping from lawful custody. Busoga East Launches Four-Day Plea to Enhance Justice and Case Resolution in the Judicial System."

  By Kenneth Wamatoyi Busoga East has launched a four-day plea bargain camp at Kirinya Jinja Remand Prison to enhance access to justice and expedite case resolution in the judicial system. The session, chaired by Hon. Justice David Batema, the resident judge of Iganga High Court, is hearing cases of murder, aggravated robbery, rape, defilement, aggravated defilement, and trafficking in persons from districts including Iganga, Mayuge, Luuka, Kaliro, Bugweri, Bugiri, Namayingo, and Namutumba. According to Justice Batema, 85 suspects who are on remand at Kirinya applied to take part in the plea bargain process. Since Monday, 38 have been convicted, with 14 committed for aggravated defilement, 7 charged with murder, and 6 charged with rape, among others. He explained that this system enables accused persons to negotiate a plea, addressing some of the pressing challenges in the judicial system, such as case backlogs, high costs, and delays. Labor Minister shuts down GM sugar factory following worker deaths

  The Minister of State for Labour, Esther Anyakun, on Tuesday ordered the closure of the GM Sugar Factory in Buikwe following reports of three worker deaths on duty. Leading a team from the Labour Ministry, Anyakun stated that available reports indicate that two casual labourers and a supervisor lost their lives near the boiler area in the past three months. She noted that the factory has failed to meet the required minimum safety standards, frequently exposing workers to permanent injuries or even death. Upon her arrival at the factory premises in the evening, after the day shift had ended, Anyakun observed that casual labourers were being forced to work overtime without pay. Engaging with the workers, many accused the factory operators of failing to provide them with up-to-date protective gear. 6 killed in Kampala floods

  KAMPALA, UGANDA | BBN |   At least six people including two minors were killed by floods following the heavy downpour in Kampala. Wednesday’s downpour also left hundreds of travellers stranded due to flooded and impassable roads. The rain that lasted hours started in the wee hours cutting off several roads leading to the city centre. Some vehicles were submerged at some section of Kampala-Jinja highway at Kyambogo, Kinawataka(Katogo), and parts of the Northern Bypass. Jinja District Unveils 47.67 Billion Shilling Budget for 2025/26

By Kenneth Wamatoyi Jinja District Council has unveiled a proposed budget of 47.67 billion shillings for the financial year 2025/26, focusing on wages, infrastructure, and essential services. The budget, presented on March 25, 2025, at Jinja District Hall, is now under review by various district committees before final approval. The budget allocates 29.15 billion shillings (61.1%) to wages, 15.48 billion shillings (32.5%) for non-wage recurrent expenditures, and 3.04 billion shillings (6.4%) for capital development projects. Speaker Namukose Monica stated that councillors have been given time to review the budget and suggest amendments. The District Executive Committee (DEC) compiled the budget and submitted it to relevant committees for further scrutiny. The donation, delivered on Wednesday by Rev. Jackson Magombe, Nandala's personal assistant and Director of Operations at the Nandala Foundation, included 4,700 kg of maize flour, 3,200 kg of sugar, an additional 100 kg of rice, 100 kg of sugar, and two cartons of soap for Mutufu Prison. During an engagement meeting between little persons and PWD leaders at the Namayingo District Council Hall, they voiced their concerns about being isolated when it comes to benefiting from government-funded programs, despite being Ugandans. "They say because we are short, I have never received any money, either for PDM, Emyooga, or the PWDs grant," said Alice Nelima. "We are not seen, and whenever we try to join some groups, we are left out. When we try to get the PDM money, they tell us that if we get it, we must return it with 10% interest."
